Claude ID checks made r/LocalLLaMA ask what local models are for
Original: More reasons to go local: Claude is beginning to require identity verification, including an valid ID like passport or drivers license and a facial recognition scan. View original →
r/LocalLLaMA did not treat Claude identity verification as a routine account-security note. The thread landed because it reframed the local-model pitch: if cloud LLM access starts to look like KYC, running a model on your own hardware becomes less about tokens per second and more about who gets to ask for your documents.
The linked Claude Help Center page says users may need a valid government-issued photo ID and a phone or computer with a camera. Accepted examples include a passport, driver license or state/provincial ID card, and national identity card. The same page says users may be asked for a live selfie, that verification typically takes under five minutes, and that Persona collects and holds the ID and selfie rather than Anthropic copying those images onto its own systems.
The community reaction was blunt. Several commenters wondered whether this is an abuse-prevention step, a response to pressure around foreign model labs using frontier services, or simply a new personal-data demand attached to a text model. The strongest technical point underneath the anger is that hosted models keep adding policy layers that local models do not have by design: account standing, geography, billing risk, trust-and-safety gates, and now identity workflow.
That does not make the policy automatically unreasonable. Frontier providers are dealing with misuse, export controls, fraud, and expensive infrastructure. But for local-LLM users, the threshold has changed. A model that is slower or less capable can still be preferable if it keeps prompts, outputs, and identity outside a third-party verification stack.
The useful follow-up is practical: which Claude plans or usage patterns trigger verification, how long Persona retains data, how appeals work, and whether comparable checks spread to other model providers. Until those details are boring and predictable, local inference will keep getting a privacy argument that benchmark charts cannot answer.
