Microsoft is preparing a path for Xbox 360 games on PC, according to an August 3 report from The Verge shared on r/Games. The document described by The Verge says Xbox 360 titles would run on the next-generation Project Helix console, Xbox-branded PCs, and handheld devices. The planned rollout is gradual and targets the 2027-2028 window.
The plan is not automatic library conversion. Developers and publishers would opt in to make Xbox 360 titles backward compatible, while controlling price and Game Pass availability. Microsoft has already started a related push for original Xbox games on PC. The full launch for original Xbox support is listed for October 2026, after an initial July program that included four games.
The same leaked document also describes a disc-to-digital program for Xbox One and Series games. A player would insert a physical disc into an Xbox One or Series X with a disc drive, then receive a digital license tied to both that account and that specific disc. If the disc changes hands, the license transfers with it, which keeps resale possible while preventing two owners from using one disc license at once.
The r/Games reaction centered on which games could realistically make the jump. Fable 2 came up repeatedly, with commenters also naming Gears of War 2 and 3, Morrowind, and licensed titles that may be harder to clear. The useful caveat is that this is still based on a leaked document, not a public catalog. The player impact depends on publisher participation, music and vehicle rights, and whether Microsoft keeps the reported 2027-2028 timing.
