OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5 Instant as New Default ChatGPT Model
OpenAI launched GPT-5.5 Instant on May 5, 2026, replacing GPT-5.3 Instant as the default model for ChatGPT and available immediately in the API as chat-latest. The rollout reaches all ChatGPT users, from free to Pro tier.
Performance Gains
In internal evaluations, GPT-5.5 Instant produced 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims than GPT-5.3 Instant on high-stakes prompts covering medicine, law, and finance. The update also dramatically reduces gratuitous emoji use and delivers cleaner, more concise answers.
Personalized Memory Search
Plus and Pro subscribers gain access to a new personalization feature: GPT-5.5 Instant can use its search tool to reference past conversations, uploaded files, and connected Gmail accounts to deliver context-aware answers. The feature launches on web first, with mobile support coming soon.
Migration Timeline
Paid users can still access GPT-5.3 Instant through model configuration settings for three months before it is retired.
