Super Mario Galaxy 2 patch 1.4.0 adds a new storybook chapter on Switch and Switch 2

Ver. 1.4.0 does more than stability work
Nintendo posted Ver. 1.4.0 for Super Mario Galaxy 2 on April 29, 2026. The support note says the update fixes several issues for a smoother experience on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, but the headline item is content: a new story in the storybook.
The unlock requirement is specific. Once the Final Chapter is available in the storybook, players can read the new entry by clearing any galaxy and earning a Power Star. That makes this update more than a quiet compatibility patch. Nintendo framed it as routine support documentation, but the note adds something players can actually go unlock.
Switch 2 compatibility still has a floor
- The game must be updated to Ver. 1.2.0 or later to play on Nintendo Switch 2.
- Ver. 1.4.0 is the latest version listed on Nintendo's support page.
- The patch note applies to both Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch.
That distinction matters because Nintendo support notes often read like maintenance bulletins. Here, the note gives a version number, a release date, a clear unlock path, and a brand-new collectible story beat. For players who already finished the game, that is a reason to boot it again instead of just accepting a required compatibility update.
The Reddit thread in r/Games sat at 252 points and 83 comments at crawl time. The reaction focused less on bug fixing and more on the surprise that an older Mario release picked up a fresh storybook chapter instead of another no-content support patch.
