Susam Pal proposes three inverse laws for humans interacting with AI, framed as the human-side counterpart to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics. Where Asimov's laws constrain robot behavior to protect humans, these constrain human judgment to protect humans from over-relying on AI.
Law 1: Non-Anthropomorphism
Humans must not attribute emotions, intentions, or moral agency to AI systems. Modern chatbots are tuned to sound conversational and empathetic, but they are large statistical models producing plausible text from data patterns. Anthropomorphism distorts judgment and can lead to emotional dependence.
Law 2: Non-Deference
AI-generated content must not be treated as authoritative without independent verification. Search engines placing AI answers at the top create a natural stopping point that trains users toward passive acceptance — treating AI as a default authority rather than a starting point.
Law 3: Non-Abdication of Responsibility
Humans must remain fully responsible for consequences arising from AI use. No matter how autonomous the AI appears, the choice to act on its output belongs to the human. Pal acknowledges these laws are not exhaustive or foolproof, but argues a non-exhaustive framework still helps us think more clearly about the risks involved.
