Buying established service businesses and rebuilding their workflows around AI has become a $12B proposition. Thrive Holdings raised $2B from investors including SoftBank, D1 Capital Partners, and Altimeter Capital, backing a model that looks less like conventional software sales and more like AI-focused private equity.

According to TechCrunch’s report, more than 70 businesses now operate on Thrive Holdings platforms. Current, its accounting arm, includes over 50 firms and more than 2,000 professionals. Shield, the information technology arm, brings together roughly 20 companies. Part of the new capital will expand those operations, while another portion will establish a third platform for regulatory services tied to physical assets.

Operational numbers, not another model benchmark

The strongest evidence comes from tax preparation. Current’s self-improving TaxAI agents processed more than 7,000 tax returns at 98% accuracy, while reducing preparation time by over 30% at participating firms, according to Thrive. Shield says its AI products accelerated help-desk resolution by 36 times. The number of custom AI agents deployed on that platform also doubled in the last month.

The next target is the paperwork surrounding data centers, manufacturing plants, health facilities, power and water systems, and transportation projects. Thrive describes the new vertical as work required to get physical assets approved, built, certified, and kept in operation. AI would handle document-heavy tasks such as research, reporting, permit preparation, inspection records, and compliance tracking, rather than replacing field work, local judgment, or professional sign-off.

The enterprise AI contest moves into deployment

Thrive Holdings was spun out of Thrive Capital, a major OpenAI investor. OpenAI took an ownership stake in December 2025 and agreed to place employees inside Thrive companies to speed adoption. The arrangement reflects a broader shift: OpenAI and Anthropic have also paired with large private-equity firms to create engineering teams that work directly inside enterprises.

The important test is whether the 98% accuracy achieved in tax workflows carries into fragmented permitting regimes where rules and evidence vary by location. Still, the financing makes the market’s priority unusually clear. Investors are rewarding measured reductions in processing time and error rates—not merely access to a frontier model. Thrive’s next phase will show whether hands-on operational redesign can scale across regulated industries without losing the domain expertise that made the first results possible.
