Anthropic Leases SpaceX's Entire Colossus 1 Cluster — Claude Rate Limits Doubled
The Deal
Anthropic has signed an agreement with SpaceX to lease all compute capacity at the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee — the cluster formerly built by xAI for Grok training. The deal gives Anthropic access to over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs and 300 megawatts of capacity within the month.
Immediate Impact on Claude Users
- Five-hour rate limits for Claude Pro and Max doubled immediately
- Peak-hours throttling removed for Pro and Max
- Claude Opus API rate limits considerably raised
Background: SpaceXAI
Elon Musk merged xAI into SpaceX and renamed the AI division SpaceXAI. SpaceX filed confidentially for an IPO on April 1 targeting a $1.75–2 trillion valuation, and naming Anthropic as a compute tenant strengthens SpaceX's AI infrastructure pitch ahead of its June roadshow.
