OpenAI has opened a Linux preview of its ChatGPT desktop application, bringing ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex into one workspace. The move takes conversational and coding-agent workflows beyond browser tabs and into the operating system used by a large share of software developers. Installers are available for both x64 and ARM64 architectures.

The source post says the app can work with existing projects and browser workflows on supported Linux systems. A follow-up specifies the initial compatibility list: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, plus Fedora 43 and 44. Users install either a .deb or .rpm package depending on the distribution family.
Why an official client matters
OpenAI previously consolidated its newer macOS and Windows desktop experience around Chat, Work and Codex. The Linux preview extends that product direction to a developer-heavy platform. Codex is particularly relevant because its workflow spans project files, command execution and change review, interactions that benefit from a native operating-system surface rather than a standalone chat tab.
OpenAI’s account usually carries model releases, ChatGPT updates, API changes and research. This post is a platform expansion rather than a benchmark claim. Linux users have long relied on browser-installed applications or unofficial Electron wrappers, while feature-request threads asking for an official client date back to 2024. A first-party preview creates a controlled route for authentication, project integration and application updates.
The preview remains narrower than “Linux support” in the broad sense. Only five distribution versions are listed, leaving older long-term-support releases, rolling distributions and other package formats outside the stated compatibility set. Desktop-stack differences such as Wayland versus X11, enterprise package policies and hardware-specific feature availability may also affect adoption.
What to watch next
OpenAI has not given a date for a stable Linux channel in the source thread. The next useful details will be broader distribution support, automatic-update behavior, sandboxing and permission controls, and parity with the macOS and Windows clients. Developers should also watch how deeply Codex can connect local projects to browser workflows without creating confusing security boundaries.
