Chrome AI Mode、tabs・PDF・imagesを同じ画面の検索へ引き込む

GoogleがAI Modeを、独立したsearch destinationからbrowser-native research workspaceへ変え始めた。2026年4月16日のChrome and Search updateによると、ChromeのAI Modeはユーザーが開いたwebpageの横に並び、search contextを保ったままfollow-up questionsに答えられる。Updateは現在U.S.で利用でき、Googleは今後より多くの地域へ広げる計画だ。

中心となる変化はChrome desktopのside-by-side layoutだ。ユーザーがAI Modeでlinkをクリックすると、webpageはsearch flowを置き換えず、AI Modeの横に開く。Googleはassistantがpage contextとweb全体の情報を使い、follow-up questionsに答えられるとしている。これはweb searchの形を変える。Resultはanswer pageを離れるためのlinkではなく、sourceを見ながら細部を比較し、質問を続けるsessionの一部になる。

AI Modeはrecent tabsも検索対象にできる。Chrome desktopまたはmobileで、ユーザーはNew Tab pageのsearch boxにあるplus menu、またはAI Mode内の既存plus menuからrecent tabsをqueryに追加できる。同じinput flowにはtabs、images、PDFsなどのfilesを混ぜられる。学生ならlecture slides、class notes、academic papersを一つの質問に入れられるし、買い物中のユーザーなら複数のproduct pagesを開いたまま、細かい情報を手作業でコピーせず比較できる。

Plus menuはAI Mode toolsのbroader launcherにもなっている。GoogleはCanvasとimage creationが、Chrome内で新しいplus menuが見える場所なら使えると説明する。Browserの中でsearch、page reading、file context、visual generation、structured workspaceの機能が重なり始めるわけだ。同時に、assistantがuser-selected contextとweb-derived contextを同時に扱うため、source handlingとattributionをどれだけ明確に示すかも重要になる。

Publishersとwebsitesにとって、side-by-side designはAI searchをめぐる議論で注目すべき折衷案だ。ユーザーは抽象化されたanswerだけを見るのではなく、page自体も見続けられる。一方でAI Modeはsessionの横に残り、次に何を見るかを仲介できる。ユーザーにはtab switchingを減らす利点があり、Googleにはopen tabs、files、images、browsing behaviorを次の質問のinputsにする大きな狙いがある。
