OpenAI adds a $100 ChatGPT Pro tier and reshapes Codex usage limits
Original: We’re updating our ChatGPT Pro and Plus subscriptions to better support the growing use of Codex. We’re introducing a new $100/month Pro tier. This new tier offers 5x more Codex usage than Plus and is best for longer, high-effort Codex sessions. In ChatGPT, this new Pro tier still offers access to all Pro features, including the exclusive Pro model and unlimited access to Instant and Thinking models. To celebrate the launch, we’re increasing Codex usage for a limited time through May 31st so that Pro $100 subscribers get up to 10x usage of ChatGPT Plus on Codex to build your most ambitious ideas. On April 9, 2026, OpenAI said in an X post that it is restructuring ChatGPT subscriptions around Codex usage. The company is introducing a new $100/month Pro tier positioned between ChatGPT Plus and the existing $200 Pro tier. OpenAI says the new plan offers 5x more Codex usage than Plus and still includes the broader Pro bundle, including the exclusive Pro model and unlimited access to the Instant and Thinking models. Through May 31, OpenAI says subscribers on the new $100 plan will get up to 10x the Codex usage of ChatGPT Plus.
The rest of the thread makes clear that this is not just an added SKU. In a follow-up post, OpenAI said the temporary Codex promotion for existing Plus subscribers ends on April 9 and that Plus usage is being rebalanced toward more sessions across a week instead of longer sessions in a single day. In another follow-up, the company said the existing $200 Pro tier remains its highest-usage option. OpenAI also said current $200 Pro subscribers will keep a 2x Codex usage promotion through May 31 and will receive a rate-limit reset.
Codex is becoming its own pricing axis
The notable signal is how directly OpenAI is now pricing around agentic coding workload instead of around general access alone. The new ladder separates lighter Codex experimentation, heavier multi-session work, and the highest-volume tier into distinct choices. That suggests Codex demand is growing fast enough that OpenAI now needs finer control over how much sustained tool use each subscription can support. For developers and small teams, the practical takeaway is that Codex access is moving closer to a differentiated productivity product inside ChatGPT rather than a side benefit folded into one flat plan.
