OpenAI moves to acquire Astral, the company behind uv and Ruff

On March 19, 2026, OpenAI said it plans to acquire Astral, the company behind the open-source Python tools uv, Ruff, and ty. The transaction is still subject to regulatory approval, and both companies said they will continue operating independently until the deal closes.

Astral’s products already sit deep in the daily workflow of Python developers. uv has become a fast package and project manager, Ruff is widely used for linting and formatting, and ty is part of Astral’s growing tooling stack. OpenAI said those products are used by millions of developers and emphasized that it intends to keep supporting them after the acquisition.

Why OpenAI wants Astral

OpenAI’s framing is that code generation alone is no longer enough. The company said software engineering is becoming a collaborative workflow where AI systems help with planning, writing, running, reviewing, and maintaining code. Owning or tightly integrating foundational developer tooling would let OpenAI connect Codex more directly to the environment-management, quality, and packaging layers where real work happens.

OpenAI also used the announcement to underline Codex’s momentum. It said Codex has seen 3x user growth and 5x usage growth since the start of 2026, with more than 2 million weekly active users. Those numbers help explain why OpenAI is pushing beyond model access and into workflow infrastructure.
