Resident Evil 2 remake has reached 19.75 million copies sold, passing Resident Evil 5’s 19.01 million and becoming the best-selling Resident Evil entry. IGN reported the updated Capcom figures on July 28, ending RE5’s 15-year run at the top of the franchise chart.
The player-facing numbers are the story. Resident Evil 2 remake launched in 2019 and now sits at 19.75 million. Resident Evil 5, released in 2009, is listed at 19.01 million. Other major entries remain close enough to keep the ranking fluid: Resident Evil 7 biohazard is at 18.41 million, Resident Evil 4 remake is at 16.04 million, and Resident Evil Village is at 15.86 million.
The shift shows how Capcom’s remake catalog keeps selling long after launch. RE2 remake has benefited from discounts, current platform visibility, and renewed interest around Leon S. Kennedy after later series releases. RE5 held the lead for years despite mixed long-term discussion, helped by its co-op campaign and the large audience that followed the original Resident Evil 4.
The Reddit thread focused less on surprise and more on why RE5 stayed first for so long. Several commenters pointed to couch and online co-op as the game’s durable hook, while others framed RE2 remake as the easier modern entry point for new Resident Evil players.
