India’s AI story is shifting from usage numbers to control over models, infrastructure, and language coverage. Sarvam’s new $234 million round turns that sovereignty debate into a very concrete financing event.
TechCrunch reports that Sarvam raised $234 million at a $1.5 billion valuation. HCLTech, the IT arm of HCL Group, is contributing $150 million as the lead strategic investor, with Bessemer Venture Partners joining existing backers Khosla Ventures and Peak XV Partners.
The funding follows Sarvam’s release of open source models with 30 billion and 105 billion parameters earlier in 2026. The company plans to put the new capital toward future models for agentic, coding, and cybersecurity applications, while expanding compute capacity for deployments across Indian industries.
The operating metrics make the round more than a national-champion narrative. Sarvam says its conversational AI platform handles more than 2 million interactions per day, while its inference platform processes about 10 million API calls daily. Its speech models transcribe more than 500,000 hours of audio each month, and its document AI systems have been used on more than 35 million pages of records.
The strategic question is whether India can move beyond being a massive market for foreign AI tools. OpenAI and Anthropic have both described India as their second-largest market after the U.S., but frontier model access and compute remain concentrated abroad. Sarvam’s round gives India’s local AI stack a larger runway to prove that language coverage, public-sector deployments, and enterprise distribution can become a defensible advantage.
