What Cloudflare says the stack does

Cloudflare's March 11 general-availability announcement says AI Security for Apps sits in front of AI-powered applications as part of the company's reverse-proxy layer. From there it tries to solve three problems in sequence: find AI endpoints across a web property, detect risky or off-policy prompts, and send those signals into the existing WAF rules engine so teams can block, log, or customize responses with the same policy framework they already use elsewhere.

Discovery is meant to identify LLM-powered endpoints from behavior, not just from obvious paths such as /chat/completions.
Detection supports common request formats used by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, Cohere, xAI, DeepSeek, and others.
The GA release added custom topics detection so teams can score business-specific categories and decide whether to log, block, or handle them differently.

Cloudflare also widened distribution with the GA launch. Full protection is available now for Enterprise customers, AI endpoint discovery is free for Free, Pro, and Business plans, and the company highlighted integrations with IBM Cloud Internet Services and Wiz AI Security. That distribution choice matters because it positions endpoint visibility as a baseline requirement, not a premium extra.

Why it matters

The interesting part is not that Cloudflare has built another isolated LLM filter. The company is trying to fold AI traffic into the broader application-security stack so prompt injection signals can be combined with IP reputation, browser fingerprints, bot behavior, and other edge data. That makes the product more about operational control than about simple content moderation.

For teams shipping agents, copilots, or retrieval apps on the public Internet, the takeaway is practical. Before you can defend AI systems, you need to know where those endpoints actually live, what prompt formats they accept, and how to enforce model-aware rules without rebuilding your entire security model around a separate tool.
