AlphaGo Creator David Silver Raises Record $1.1B for AI Lab Ineffable Intelligence
David Silver, the Google DeepMind researcher behind AlphaGo and AlphaZero, has raised a record $1.1 billion seed round for his new AI startup Ineffable Intelligence — just months after founding it. The raise is the largest seed round ever in Europe.
The round was co-led by Sequoia and Lightspeed, with participation from Nvidia, Google, DST Global, Index Ventures, and the UK's Sovereign AI Fund. The post-money valuation stands at $5.1 billion.
Ineffable Intelligence is built around a single core bet: that reinforcement learning (RL) can achieve superintelligence without relying on human-generated data. Silver describes the goal as building a "superlearner" — an AI capable of discovering knowledge and skills through experience and self-play alone.
Silver's prior work at DeepMind proved this concept at scale. AlphaGo beat the world champion at Go without human examples. AlphaZero mastered chess, Go, and shogi from scratch. AlphaStar played StarCraft II at a professional level — all from self-generated data alone, with no human demonstrations.
Founded in late 2025 and based in London, Ineffable plans to use the funding to scale its research team and compute infrastructure. The company has not announced a product timeline, but its site describes a mission to build systems that "transcend the limits of human knowledge."
The raise signals growing investor conviction that next-generation AI won't come from scaling up text prediction — but from agents that learn through interaction. Read the full story at TechCrunch.

r/singularity upvoted the round less because of venture spectacle and more because David Silver’s name still means AlphaZero-era reinforcement learning. The discussion centered on whether a “superlearner” trained without human data could become a genuinely different path from today’s web-trained LLM stack.
Investors just placed another billion-dollar bet on an AI path that tries to move beyond human-written data. David Silver’s new lab, Ineffable Intelligence, raised $1.1 billion to pursue reinforcement-learning systems it calls “superlearners.”
Alphabet just rewired the AI capital race: $10 billion goes to Anthropic now at a $350 billion valuation, with another $30 billion tied to performance targets. Coming days after Amazon’s own pledge, the deal shows that frontier labs are no longer raising money in rounds so much as pre-buying compute at planetary scale.
