Final Fantasy XIV launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026 at 3:00 a.m. PDT. Square Enix’s Lodestone post says the Nintendo eShop lineup includes the Starter Edition, Complete Edition, Complete Collector’s Edition, and Free Trial. Both Complete Edition versions are discounted 30 percent until August 13 to mark the launch.
The subscription terms are specific. Square Enix is waiving subscription fees for about one month after release to support a stable launch. After that, the 30-day free play period included with registering a new platform begins. Once those periods end, a subscription fee is required to keep playing. A separate Nintendo Switch 2 subscription is required even if the same account is already subscribed on another platform.
There is one discount path for existing players. If a player has remaining game time on another platform, the Nintendo Switch 2 subscription is available at half price. That half-price discount does not apply while free game time is active elsewhere. Nintendo Switch Online is not required to play Final Fantasy XIV, though subscribers get one additional aetheryte that can be set as a free teleport destination on the Switch 2 version.
The r/Games thread’s practical concern was account handling rather than a trailer beat. Players carrying over an existing character need to choose the service account they already use when registering the license. On first launch, the Nintendo user profile links to a Square Enix account, and Square Enix warns that it cannot be unlinked or transferred afterward. For Switch 2 players, the decision points are edition price, free time, separate subscription, FFXIV Coins, and account linking.
