One Small Event, 1,371 Applicants
COVEN, a three-person indie studio based in France, organized a Steam curation event called Out of the Box Games, a showcase for projects that challenge conventions in art, gameplay, or narrative. Co-founder Celine shared on Reddit that she was shocked to receive 1,371 game applications for what she considered a small, niche event.
Minimal Promotion, Maximum Response
The event was announced on COVEN's social channels and listed on game marketing expert Chris Zukowski's How To Market A Game event calendar. No big marketing budget was involved, and still over a thousand studios applied, revealing how hungry the indie development community is for any visibility opportunity, no matter how small.
The Brutal Reality of Indie Visibility
The numbers paint a stark picture of the current Steam ecosystem. With hundreds of new games releasing every week, even small curation events attract thousands of competing titles. Making a great game is no longer enough. Active community outreach, marketing strategy, and landing slots in events like this have become survival necessities for indie developers. COVEN's post struck a nerve on r/gamedev, resonating with thousands of developers facing the same uphill battle.
