Moonshot AI Raises $2B at $20B Valuation in China's Largest-Ever AI Funding Round
Overview
Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI raised approximately $2 billion in its latest funding round, bringing its valuation to more than $20 billion, Bloomberg reported on May 7. The round was led by Long-Z Investments, the venture arm of Chinese food-delivery giant Meituan, which reportedly invested more than $200 million.
Investors
The roster includes Alibaba, Tencent, HongShan (formerly Sequoia China), ZhenFund, IDG Capital, 5Y Capital, China Mobile, and CITIC's CPE fund. This is Moonshot's third major raise in six months: $500 million at $4.3 billion late last year, then $700 million at $10 billion earlier this year. Total capital raised in six months now stands at $3.9 billion — the largest ever by a Chinese LLM startup.
Revenue Growth
Moonshot's Kimi chatbot drove annual recurring revenue past $200 million as of April, fueled by subscriptions and enterprise API services. The company more than quadrupled its valuation in just six months. Amid tightening Chinese IPO regulations, large private rounds have become the preferred path for growth-stage AI startups.
Open-Source Plans
Moonshot has signaled plans to open-source versions of its Kimi models under an MIT license, positioning itself as a capable, permissive Chinese LLM alternative for the global developer community.
