Account-Wide Lockout for Routine Legal Work

A lawyer doing routine criminal case work had his Gmail, Google Voice number, photos, and contacts locked after uploading text-only law enforcement reports to Google NotebookLM.

What Happened

Brian Chase, adjunct professor at the University of Arizona law school and digital forensics expert, uploaded law enforcement reports from a child sexual abuse material possession case to NotebookLM on February 14, 2026. The upload contained no images or videos — text only.

Within seconds, he received a terms of service violation notification and deleted the upload. By Monday morning, he was signed out of all Google services and his account was disabled. No access to Gmail, Google Voice, Photos, or Contacts; other services tied to his Google Voice number stopped working; appeal submitted but no way to provide additional context to Google.

Account access was restored on Tuesday. Chase stated that nothing he uploaded was illegal, nothing violated attorney ethical rules, but Google flagged it anyway, and there is very little recourse once that happens. Google did not respond to press inquiries.

A Broader Pattern: AI Refusing Public Records

The case highlights a wider pattern. NotebookLM users report the tool refuses to summarize Epstein-related public documents. ChatGPT exhibited similar refusals, and OpenAI acknowledged it was an incorrect refusal and stated they are working on a fix. In contrast, DeepSeek and Kimi (both China-based) handled the same documents without refusals.

The Structural Problem

When a text-only upload of lawful legal documents triggers an immediate account-wide lockout, it raises serious questions about proportionality, transparency, and the reliability of AI tools for professional work. Lawyers, journalists, and researchers working with sensitive but public records face an environment where AI tools may shut down without warning, explanation, or meaningful recourse.
