This is purpose-built, hardware-aware machine learning designed for a scientific instrument with brutal throughput limits. The HN interest makes sense because the work is a reminder that AI progress is not only about bigger models and more expensive accelerators. In some systems, the winning move is to shrink the model until it fits directly inside the decision loop.

That matters even more as CERN prepares for the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade, which is expected to drive event sizes and data rates sharply higher. The trigger stack will need to reject even more noise without missing novel physics. The caveat is that this remains a narrow, highly validated deployment, not a general inference platform.
