Why the timing is important

The timing matters because Epic is not just discounting access or running a limited trial. It is removing the mode's upfront payment barrier entirely and doing so with transition messaging aimed at both new and long-time players. That lowers friction for co-op onboarding and gives Epic a clearer way to fold Save the World back into Fortnite's wider audience. At the same time, the company is careful to preserve Founder-specific V-Bucks earning rules, which suggests it recognizes that legacy players are sensitive to anything that looks like dilution of their original purchase.

What is still unanswered

There are still open questions after the announcement. Epic's public post and pre-registration page explain the launch date, reward structure, and Founder treatment, but they do not fully map out the long-term monetization, onboarding flow, or how quickly the mode could absorb a larger audience. Even so, this is clearly high-signal. A nine-year-old paid PvE mode in one of gaming's biggest live-service ecosystems is about to become free for everyone, and Epic is framing the change as a full relaunch rather than a quiet catalog tweak.
