AI Detection and Enforcement Data

Meta said its AI systems are being used to analyze text, images, and surrounding context to identify celeb-bait scams, brand impersonation, deceptive links, and domain spoofing. The company argues these patterns are difficult to catch with older rule-based systems because scammers rely on subtle framing and low-signal account behavior rather than obvious spam markers.

The enforcement numbers are material. Meta says it removed more than 159 million scam ads in 2025, with 92% taken down before user reports. In India, the company said it banned more than 12.1 million pieces of ad content in 2025 for fraud, scam, and deceptive-practices violations, with over 93% removed proactively. It also said it removed 10.9 million accounts on Facebook and Instagram associated with criminal scam centers and disabled over 150,000 accounts linked to scam-center networks in Southeast Asia through a joint disruption operation with law enforcement.

Why This Matters

The announcement is important because it shows how large consumer platforms are repositioning AI as a trust-and-safety infrastructure layer, not only as a recommendation or assistant feature. The advertiser verification target is also notable: Meta says it wants verified advertisers to represent 90% of its ad revenue by the end of 2026, up from 70% today. That suggests a meaningful operational change in how higher-risk ad categories will be screened and monetized.

The main implementation question is user trust. Features like AI scam review on Messenger could improve protection, but adoption will depend on whether users believe the review flow is understandable and proportionate.
