What happened

TBPN posted on X on April 2, 2026 that OpenAI had acquired the company. OpenAI confirmed the transaction the same day, describing it as a move to broaden the global conversation around AI rather than simply buy a media property. The company said TBPN brings strong editorial instincts, audience understanding, and an ability to convene influential voices across technology, business, and culture.

OpenAI said TBPN will sit inside its Strategy organization and report to Chris Lehane. At the same time, it stressed that editorial independence is part of the agreement: TBPN will continue to run its programming, choose its guests, and make its own editorial decisions. Jordi Hays, John Coogan, Dylan Abruscato, and the rest of the team are expected to remain involved.

The significance is broader than media ownership. OpenAI is signaling that distribution, trust, and narrative framing are now strategic functions in AI. OpenAI’s own announcement said the company needs a space for constructive conversation about how AI changes daily life. CNBC also reported that TBPN, launched in 2025, had already attracted sponsorships including Google Gemini and, citing the Wall Street Journal, generated about 5 million dollars in advertising revenue in 2025 with a path toward more than 30 million dollars in 2026.
