OpenAI’s Video API guide says the API now supports creating, extending, editing, and downloading generated videos programmatically. The documentation distinguishes between sora-2, positioned for speed and iteration, and sora-2-pro, positioned for higher-fidelity output such as cinematic footage and marketing assets. Both support 16- and 20-second generations, and the workflow is asynchronous: developers submit a job, poll or use webhooks for completion, and then download the resulting media.

The new character system is one of the more consequential additions. Rather than conditioning only on a single reference frame, teams can upload a short source clip and reuse a returned character asset across multiple generations. OpenAI also documents support for video extensions, where a completed clip can be continued in up to six steps for a maximum combined length of 120 seconds.
