Codex, 주간 300만 developers에게 Mac app·browser·image 작업을 맡긴다

Codex가 code editor 안의 assistant에서 developer workstation 전체를 다루는 agent로 이동하고 있다. OpenAI는 4월 16일 product post에서 Codex를 매주 300만 명이 넘는 developers가 사용한다고 밝혔다. 새 desktop app update의 핵심은 code를 더 많이 쓰는 기능만이 아니다. OpenAI는 Codex가 visual checking, review comments, docs, remote machines, 며칠에 걸친 follow-up work처럼 코드 주변의 번거로운 작업까지 이어받도록 만들고 있다.

가장 공격적인 기능은 background computer use다. OpenAI에 따르면 Codex는 이제 Mac에서 자기 cursor로 보고, 클릭하고, 입력하며 app을 조작할 수 있다. 여러 agents가 병렬로 움직여도 사용자의 다른 작업을 방해하지 않도록 설계됐다. 개발자 입장에서는 agent가 local app을 테스트하거나, UI behavior를 확인하거나, API가 없는 tool을 직접 사용할 수 있다는 뜻이다. Codex에는 in-app browser도 들어갔다. 사용자는 page 위에 직접 comment를 남겨 frontend나 game development 작업에 대한 지시를 더 정확히 줄 수 있다.

이번 update는 media creation도 같은 loop 안으로 끌어온다. Codex는 gpt-image-1.5를 사용해 images를 생성하고 반복 수정할 수 있으며, screenshots와 code를 함께 참고해 product concepts, frontend designs, mockups, games 작업을 지원한다. OpenAI는 skills, app integrations, MCP servers를 묶은 90개가 넘는 plugins도 추가했다. Source에 언급된 예시는 Atlassian Rovo, CircleCI, CodeRabbit, GitLab Issues, Microsoft Suite, Neon by Databricks, Remotion, Render, Superpowers다.

일상적인 engineering workflow 쪽 변화도 크다. App은 GitHub review comments 처리, multiple terminal tabs, alpha 상태의 SSH remote devboxes 연결을 지원한다. Sidebar에서는 PDFs, spreadsheets, slides, docs를 rich previews로 열 수 있고, summary pane은 agent plans, sources, artifacts를 추적한다. 긴 session에서 인간이 agent의 판단 근거를 audit해야 할 때 이 정보는 단순 편의 기능 이상이다.

Codex는 이제 작업을 끊지 않고 이어가는 쪽으로도 확장된다. Automations는 기존 conversation threads를 재사용하고, future work를 schedule하며, 나중에 깨어나 task를 계속할 수 있다. Memory preview는 preferences, corrections, 이전에 모은 context를 기억한다. OpenAI는 projects, connected plugins, memory를 바탕으로 Google Docs의 open comments, Slack, Notion, codebase context를 묶어 다음 작업을 제안할 수 있다고 설명한다.

Rollout은 ChatGPT로 로그인한 Codex desktop app users부터 시작된다. Personalization features는 Enterprise, Edu, EU, UK users에게 추후 제공되고, computer use는 우선 macOS에서 시작된다. 관건은 developers가 browser, desktop apps, terminals를 오가는 agent를 신뢰할 수 있느냐다. 그 신뢰가 생기면 coding agents는 autocomplete가 아니라 software work의 operating layer에 가까워진다.
