Codex、週300万developersにMac app・browser・image作業まで任せる

Codexがcode editor内のassistantから、developer workstation全体を扱うagentへ移っている。OpenAIは4月16日のproduct postで、Codexを毎週300万人超のdevelopersが使っていると説明した。今回のdesktop app updateで重要なのは、単にcodeを多く書けることではない。OpenAIはCodexに、visual checking、review comments、docs、remote machines、数日にまたがるfollow-up workまで持たせようとしている。

もっとも踏み込んだ機能はbackground computer useだ。OpenAIによれば、CodexはMac上で自分のcursorを使い、見て、クリックし、入力してappを操作できる。複数のagentsが並列で動いても、ユーザー自身の他の作業を邪魔しない設計だという。開発者にとっては、agentがlocal appをtestし、UI behaviorを確認し、APIのないtoolを直接使えるという意味になる。Codexにはin-app browserも入り、page上に直接commentを残して、frontendやgame developmentの指示を細かく伝えられる。

Media creationも同じloopに入った。Codexはgpt-image-1.5を呼び出し、imagesを生成しながら反復できる。Screenshotsとcodeを合わせて、product concepts、frontend designs、mockups、gamesの制作を支える形だ。OpenAIはさらに、skills、app integrations、MCP serversを組み合わせた90超のpluginsを追加した。Sourceが挙げた例にはAtlassian Rovo、CircleCI、CodeRabbit、GitLab Issues、Microsoft Suite、Neon by Databricks、Remotion、Render、Superpowersがある。

通常のengineering workflowでも変化は大きい。AppはGitHub review commentsへの対応、multiple terminal tabs、alpha段階のSSH remote devboxes接続をサポートする。SidebarではPDFs、spreadsheets、slides、docsをrich previewsで開ける。Summary paneはagent plans、sources、artifactsを追跡するため、長いsessionで人間がagentの根拠をauditする場面では重要な情報になる。

Codexは作業を時間的にも引き継ぐ。Automationsは既存のconversation threadsを再利用し、future workをscheduleし、後からwake upしてtaskを続けられる。Memory previewはpreferences、corrections、以前集めたcontextを覚える。OpenAIはprojects、connected plugins、memoryを使い、Google Docsのopen comments、Slack、Notion、codebase contextを合わせて次に取り組む作業を提案できるとしている。

RolloutはChatGPTでsign inしているCodex desktop app usersから始まる。Personalization featuresはEnterprise、Edu、EU、UK usersへ後日提供され、computer useはまずmacOSで始まる。問題は、developersがbrowser、desktop apps、terminalsを横断するagentをどこまで信頼できるかだ。その信頼が成立すれば、coding agentsはautocompleteではなくsoftware workのoperating layerに近づく。
