A Free PS5 Pro Upgrade Goes Live
CD Projekt Red used the PlayStation Blog on April 7, 2026 to detail a free Cyberpunk 2077 upgrade for PS5 Pro, with rollout beginning on April 8. The studio said the aim was to make fuller use of Sony’s upgraded console by combining 4K output, stronger performance, and more advanced ray tracing. In practical terms, this is not just a generic resolution bump. It is a targeted visual and performance refresh built around the hardware features Sony has been promoting for PS5 Pro.
The headline technical piece is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR. CD Projekt Red described it as an AI-driven upscaling system that improves clarity across the scene, helping Night City’s dense environments, vehicles, signage, and character detail look cleaner at high resolution. The studio also said the update adds BVH8 support to improve ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections, pushing the game closer to its intended lighting style.
Three Modes, Three Priorities
What stands out most is the choice structure. CD Projekt Red said it wants different players to prioritize visuals or frame rate in different ways, so the update ships with three distinct PS5 Pro modes instead of a single fixed profile.
- Ray Tracing Pro enables the full set of ray-tracing enhancements, including reflections, ambient occlusion, skylight, shadows, and emissive lighting. It targets 40fps on VRR displays and 30fps otherwise.
- Ray Tracing keeps selected ray-tracing improvements while aiming for a smoother 60fps.
- Performance targets the highest fluidity, reaching up to 90fps on VRR-enabled displays.
That structure matters because it turns PS5 Pro support into a user-facing feature set rather than a technical footnote. Players looking for the most cinematic presentation can push fully featured ray tracing, while others can favor responsiveness without giving up the general fidelity gains from the new hardware path. In other words, CD Projekt Red is treating PS5 Pro support as a spectrum, not a single compromise.
The studio also pointed out that Cyberpunk 2077 is currently included in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog, meaning many PS5 Pro owners can test the upgraded version without a new purchase. That lowers the barrier for trying the new modes and makes this patch more important than a niche enthusiast update. It is a clear signal that CD Projekt Red still sees value in refining one of its flagship RPGs for premium console hardware long after launch.
