State of Decay 3 Opens May Alpha Playtest Sign-Ups

A current hot post on r/pcgaming links to the official State of Decay 3 alpha playtest announcement video. PC Gamer’s follow-up report and the live FirstLook waitlist page make the bigger point clear: Undead Labs is now recruiting players for alpha tests scheduled for May. That matters because it moves the game out of the realm of proof-of-life marketing and into actual hands-on feedback.
PC Gamer quoted State of Decay co-creator Brant Fitzgerald saying the alpha will include four-player co-op, new base-building and resource strategies, and a lot of combat. The official waitlist page tells players to sign up for a chance at access and notes that people who are not selected immediately can remain on file for more opportunities later in the year. In other words, this is not framed as a one-off tease. It looks like the beginning of a broader testing funnel.
A More Meaningful Milestone Than Another Trailer
State of Decay 3 was first announced in July 2020 and then resurfaced with another cinematic in 2024, but tangible progress has been hard to read from the outside. That is why this alpha step is important. Alpha does not mean the game is close to release, but it usually does mean the main systems are stable enough to survive structured external play and useful enough to generate targeted feedback.
For a co-op survival game, that feedback is especially valuable. The studio needs to understand how group pacing feels, whether resource pressure is readable, how base-building choices affect momentum, and where combat becomes frustrating instead of tense. Those are questions trailers cannot answer. Playtests can. They also give the studio a chance to measure onboarding, networking, and technical rough spots before the conversation shifts toward beta expectations.
The practical takeaway is simple: after years of distance, State of Decay 3 is finally asking players to touch the game rather than just watch it. That makes this one of the most concrete production signals the project has emitted since it was announced, and a much stronger indicator of progress than another cinematic reveal would have been.
