An always-online design has become a direct risk

According to Kotaku's April 1, 2026 report, Frost Giant is moving quickly to add an offline mode to Stormgate. The reason is unusually blunt. In a Discord update cited by Kotaku and earlier reported by Delisted Games, Frost Giant said its server orchestration partner, Hathora, has been acquired by an AI company. That means Stormgate could lose access to its current server support at the end of April. Because the RTS has been built as an always-online game, that is not just an operations problem. It is a threat to basic game access.

Kotaku says Frost Giant is now preparing a patch that will let Stormgate remain playable offline before the server cutoff hits. That should prevent the game from becoming completely unusable when the current infrastructure arrangement ends. The tradeoff is that online multiplayer will not be available until Frost Giant finds another partner to support ongoing operations. In other words, the studio is prioritizing continuity of access first, then competitive online functionality later.

A long-requested feature suddenly became essential

The news carries extra weight because players have been asking for offline support since 2024. Frost Giant had previously treated that feature as something planned but not central. Now it is urgent. The episode is another reminder that live-service logic and platform dependency can create failure points far outside design and balance. A game does not need to be shut down by weak demand to become inaccessible; infrastructure changes alone can do it.

Stormgate's response may end up being a useful preservation case study for the wider industry. By pushing an offline patch ahead of the server disruption, Frost Giant is trying to avoid the worst outcome, where a still-supported game effectively disappears because a backend partner changed direction. The remaining question is how much of Stormgate's long-term identity can survive without online play, and how quickly Frost Giant can restore that part of the experience with a new provider.
