Offline support is getting deeper, not just checked off

Ubisoft used its April 22, 2026 update for The Crew 2 to expand the game's Hybrid Mode, which first arrived last October and lets players boot into either online or offline play. The new update is specific about what has changed: offline players can now create and save their own liveries, move selected customization data over from online saves, import pilot and vehicle statistics, and jump back to the login screen without relaunching the entire game.

The linked r/pcgaming thread reached 712 points and 49 comments at crawl time. That is a strong response for a feature update rather than a brand-new release, and the framing matters. The post was read less as a routine patch and more as a preservation milestone in the broader Stop Killing Games discussion.

What Ubisoft actually changed

On the customization side, Ubisoft says an offline "My livery" menu is now available. Players can create new liveries there, review liveries built offline, and access designs previously saved from online mode. Sticker groups can now be created and saved as well. Ubisoft also added an online export path so those liveries and sticker groups can be pushed into an offline save from the connected game.

The statistics changes are equally practical. Pilot stats and vehicle stats can now be copied into an offline profile, and offline stat progression will continue from there. That closes one of the biggest emotional gaps in preservation work: people do not just want the executable to launch after server support fades, they want their history and customization to remain meaningful when it does.

Switching modes is less clumsy now

Ubisoft also fixed a smaller but important friction point. Before this update, moving from offline back to online required relaunching the whole game. The new "Back to login" button removes that detour and makes the split-mode setup feel much less like a compromise. Hybrid support only matters if players will actually use it, and usability details like this decide that.

The Reddit reaction shows both approval and limits. The highest-voted comments treated the update as proof that offline support can keep improving after its first rollout, but some players immediately pointed out what it still does not solve: anti-cheat and platform issues for certain environments, plus the fact that improvements to The Crew 2 do nothing for games that have already been shut down for good.

Why this matters

This is why the update is worth watching even outside The Crew community. Ubisoft is not just preserving bare access. It is preserving customization, stats, and switching convenience, which is closer to preserving the actual player experience. That makes The Crew 2 one of the clearer live examples of a publisher being pushed toward post-server resilience instead of treating offline functionality as an afterthought. The result is still partial, but it is materially better than an "offline mode" that strips out identity, history, and flexibility.
