OpenAI is turning Codex from a coding workspace into a broader desktop agent. The thread says Codex can use Mac apps, create images, remember work preferences, and connect through 90+ plugins.

Hacker News pushed this story high because it reads like the most ordinary possible route into a serious breach: an old plugin business gets sold, a shared module changes hands, and the real damage stays quiet for months. By the time WordPress.org closed 31 plugins, the nastier part was already sitting inside infected wp-config.php files.

A widely discussed Hacker News thread elevated a forensic report claiming that a buyer inserted a dormant backdoor into more than 30 WordPress plugins, then activated it months later.

The GitHub project Caveman claims it can cut output tokens by about 75% by stripping filler language while preserving code and technical terms. On Hacker News, developers are treating it as a serious experiment in reducing agent cost, latency, and verbosity.

OpenAIDevs said on April 4, 2026 that developers can move from project setup to deployment with the Vercel plugin in the Codex app. The post aligns with OpenAI’s Codex plugin documentation and Vercel’s late-March rollout of plugin support for OpenAI Codex and Codex CLI.

OpenAIDevs said on March 27, 2026 that Codex usage limits had been reset across plans so users could try newly launched plugins. OpenAI's Help Center says Codex is temporarily available on Free and Go, paid plans are getting 2x rate limits, and plugins package reusable workflows built from skills, app integrations, and MCP configurations.

On February 24, 2026, Anthropic introduced new Cowork updates for finance, including five Anthropic-built plugins and new connectors for FactSet and MSCI. Claude can also carry context across Excel and PowerPoint in a research preview available on paid plans for Mac and Windows.
