Pentagon Clears Seven AI Firms for Classified Military Networks—Anthropic Excluded
AI Enters the Pentagon's Most Classified Networks
The U.S. Department of Defense announced on May 1, 2026, that it has struck agreements with Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, SpaceX, and Reflection AI to deploy AI systems on its Impact Level 6 and Impact Level 7 networks covering secret and top-secret data environments.
The Pentagon intends to use AI to streamline data synthesis, elevate situational understanding, and augment warfighter decision-making. Over 1.3 million DoD personnel already use the unclassified GenAI.mil platform for day-to-day tasks.
Anthropic: Safety Guardrails Cost a Major Contract
The conspicuous absence is Anthropic. The AI safety company refused a Pentagon demand for unrestricted access to Claude for all lawful use, holding firm on guardrails against domestic mass surveillance and autonomous weapons applications. The two parties are currently in litigation, though White House-brokered discussions reportedly resumed recently.
Vendor Diversification at Scale
The agreements represent a deliberate Pentagon strategy to avoid dependency on any single AI vendor. Previous individual agreements with Google, SpaceX, and OpenAI are now joined by Nvidia, Microsoft, and AWS. Source: TechCrunch, Breaking Defense
